Our anaerobic treatment plant is the first of its kind in the UK and is classified by the Environmental Agency as a recovery treatment process (R03), enabling our customers to declare their waste loads as a recovery route for corporate reporting and environmental sustainability purposes.
The facility works by receiving in organic waste, which it then converts using selective bacteria, in the absence of oxygen, into high quality biomethane. This biogas is then treated and cleaned before it is then directed into the National Gas Grid as a sustainable energy source, and subsequently allows the treatment to attract an R03 recovery code.
Any residual effluent from the anaerobic digestor is then directed into our aerobic treatment plant for further waste treatment, before it is finally discharged to trade effluent to Northumbrian Water’s own biological treatment plant.
